Ride up to Banzai cliff
Waking about 5:30 AM for a 6:00 AM for a bicycle ride is not
new to me, I have done worse. For today I get to ride a Giant NRS 3 with
Shimano Deore XT I know it’s a road ride but I feel more comfortable riding a
mountain bike especially what I really want is sight seeing rather then
training.
The road was still wet from the previous night’s rain. To surprise
while on a slight climb I slowly went to the shoulder to allow morning cars to
pass by. I felt the bike slowly slipping away from me before I knew. I had my
butt on the road. My 1st crash on the road for almost 1 year. Later
I would find out that the shoulder of the road here is made of crushed corals
which made it slippery as ice when wet and very abrasive.
I checked the bike 1st of course J
then myself I had some bruise and minor wounds on my legs and arms. So what
does a cyclist do after a crash hmmm no brainer I biked on.
The climbs were mild compared to some rides I did in the
past. Before I knew it I was surrounded by green lush mountains on the one side
of the road and the load roar of the sea crashing on the other side.
I arrived at my final destination, Banzai cliff. It was
called so because nearing the end of WW2 hundreds of Japanese soldiers jumped
off this cliff rather surrender to the coming Americans. The view was great enhanced
by the clear blue sky.
I was all by my self and enjoyed the morning mist of the sea.
While my ipod nano pumped out the voice jazz singer Diana Krall.
To think my day has yet to begin
